What is a "netizen"?
nêt´- î - zên (wave audio - click to hear the pronunciation) A netizen is an internet citizen, a member of the international
web surfing community. The word comes from internet citizen.
Michael
Hauben is usually credited with originating the term.
Etymology Online
(http://www.etymonline.com) has 2 clues:
"
citizen - c.1314, from Anglo-Fr. citezein (spelling alt. by infl.
of denizen)..."
and:
"
denizen - 1419, from Anglo-Fr. deinzein, from deinz
"within, inside, from L.L." deintus, from de-
"from" + intus "within.""
So the word may actually have multiple sources. Probably the
most common meaning is citizen of the 'net, or internet. You
probably know someone like this, they spend hours online, often
drink amazing quantities of highly caffinated colored sodas,
sometimes they only come out to get something to eat or to phone
for pizza.... they may be programmers or other folks that can
focus tightly on one thing for as long as it takes to get the
job done.
